Baby showers provide a wonderful way to spend time with your family and close friends and being showered with a host of fabulous gifts for your new baby is also pretty good. Another great aspect of baby showers is that they are reasonably simple to plan, though deciding just when you should have your shower can sometimes present you with problems.
If you are first time parents then having your baby shower before the birth seems like the perfect solution as you almost certainly will not yet have any baby gear and you are going to need all manner of things the moment the baby arrives. However, a shower is also the perfect time for friends and family to see the new bundle of joy so that having the shower after the birth also makes perfect sense. Here is some advice therefore which you may find of help when making a decision on timing.
One benefit of having your baby shower after the birth of the baby is that the guests will know the baby’s gender, name, and birth statistics. Knowing these details makes it much easier to select gifts, especially if the gift is going to be something that you want to have engraved. In addition, holding the event a month or so after the birth allows you time to get back to looking your ‘best’.
Holding the shower after the birth can also work very well when the child is a second or third child as generally you will already have the basics on hand and your family and friends can concentrate on purchasing essential everyday bits and pieces such as diapers and clothing.
However, having your baby shower before the new baby arrives means that you can be the guest of honor instead of the new baby. Eyes will be trained on you and you can get all the pampering. Also, having looked through your gifts you are still going to have another month or so to go shopping for the items you still need to have. Many expectant mothers will of course know the gender of their child and have already chosen a theme for the nursery so that gift giving can still be specific. Planning for your party before the birth also gives you something to look forward to at a time when you might well be simply wishing for your pregnancy to be over.
Yet another thing to consider is what you want to do by way of baby shower games. For a lot of people games form a key element of any baby shower and the games that you play may well differ depending upon whether the party is held before or after the birth of the baby. There is a huge range of games available including such things as baby shower trivia games and these also need to be considered when thinking about the timing of your baby shower.
Deciding exactly when to have your shower is very much something that has to be done on a case-by-case basis, but you should not delay your decision as nothing can be done by way of planning until you have decided upon a date. If you do decide to have the party before the baby is born then it is a good idea to schedule it for the seventh or eighth month of your pregnancy and, if you are going to hold it following the birth, then you should wait at least four to six weeks after the birth to allow you time to bond with the new baby and for you to get used to each other.
