Considering that 75% of your infant’s intellectual growth will occur before the age of 6, it is very important that you begin to stimulate your infant’s mind as soon as they are born. With newborns, everything around them is extremely influential on their developing mind - sights, sounds, smells, and touches.  No matter what their age, these early influences and inputs will help your child to learn and grow.  Considering this, it is extremely important for any parent to create a stimulating environment for their child.  A few ways to stimulate your baby’s intellect are as follows.

1. Provide enough to look at.
Surround your baby with color to stimulate their visual sense. Let them play in a playard like the Graco Pack n Playard so they have many different shapes and colors to look at. Hang colored shapes on the wall or hang a mobile above their playpen.  You might also want to hang a baby-safe mirror on the wall so your baby can recognize themselves.  Whatever you can add to spice up the visual excitement of your infant’s world - the more the better.

2. Give them tons to listen to.
You can begin to play music to child as soon as possible, newborns love music even when in the womb.  Play a CD of nature sounds for your child - whistling wind, rainforest sounds, or rain showers - anything to stimulate your child’s sense of hearing. infants love to be sung to, there is no more beautiful voice on earth to your newborn than Mommy’s voice. Also, make sure you allow your newborn to make their own sounds and noises - encourage them to play with rattles or musical toys.  Teach them how to clap. The more they explore their own sounds, the more they learn.

3. Supply them tons to touch.
Make sure your baby has plenty of room to crawl or roll around in - you might want to consider a larger size play yard, such as the Graco Pack n Play Playard In Bugs Quilt, which affords them enough space to explore the world around them. Play hand games with your child - paddycake is always a favorite. Involve your infant with your motion - bounce and dance with them in your arms. Give them lots of different textures to touch and explore. Different fabrics or toys with different surfaces, for example the toys in the Graco Pack n Playard provide many different textures for your newborn to touch. All in all, the more your allow your child to feel and to touch their world surrounding them, the more they learn and the more they are stimulated.

Your newborn’s intellectual stimulation is one of the most important aspects of their development. Giving your newborn an environment to safely learn and explore the world around them is one of your key jobs as a parent. Provide a world full of color for your baby. Give your baby the gift of stimulating and soothing sounds of music.  Introduce baby to all the things that they can lay their hands on - different textures and different surfaces.  All of these things are be very influential on your newborn and on their mind.
