It only makes sense that when you shop for your baby’s crib, you’ll be looking for bedding, too. The majority of baby bedding sets will include many different items, but you might find that you don’t really need them all. The most up-to-date recommendation for crib bedding is to use sheets only, and keep other bedding out. Leaks will happen, of course, so buy a few extra crib sheets. It’s better to spend your money on a few really good, durable, and comfortable crib sheets than on accessories you don’t even need.

Both comforters and crib bumpers are now on the “not recommended” list, because they pose a pretty serious risk of suffocation. Swaddling blankets or sleep sacks are the best alternative to loose blankets and quilts. Wearable blankets have become quite common and most people are now familiar with the concept. As swaddling has surged in popularity over the past decade, innovative new products have emerged that help in getting a customized fit. Swaddling is supposed to mimic the close quarters of the uterus, and it comforts many newborns. You will be holding your baby a lot, so you might still want a blanket or comforter for those times, especially if you’ve had a winter baby. But just keep in mind that the quilt doesn’t go into the crib when baby does.

You might be considering a sleep wedge for your baby. After all, it’s supposed to reduce the risk of SIDS, something most new parents worry about. However, since a newborn that is put to sleep on her back can’t roll over, she will remain on her back for the whole night. The argument becomes even less convincing when you realize that foam wedges are a kind of soft bedding that can become a suffocation hazard.

Some of the less obvious items you can find in a bedding set are wall decor, a crib skirt, and a window valance. Keep in mind what you and your baby actually need, though. These will probably not make the list.

If you really care about the look of the nursery (and who doesn’t?), then thing about gender neutral crib bedding like a Hot Cocoa baby bedding set. {It’s much more cost effective because you can use it again and again, regardless of the sex of your next baby.}
