Baby’s Gender: Can it be Chosen?

Today there are many reasons why a couple may seek to influence the gender of their next child. Reasons range from trying to balance their family to just a simple preference for one gender.  This of course is their personal preference and opinion and no one should question their motives or their desires, but that issue aside, can you really control or influence a baby’s gender before the mother gets pregnant?

There have been stories for centuries about how to determine a baby’s gender and many of these stories were based on fables and superstition rather than scientific fact or understanding.    As an example many believed that the woman was the one that determined the baby’s gender since the woman is the one that carried the baby.  It was believed that the baby was made the way she was according to something in the woman’s insides.  The baby being female or male is now known to be determined by the chromosomes that the father contributes to the egg and not based on the mothers at all.

There’s really not much that the father can do to control or influence the baby’s gender.  Instead the best way to do this is to consider that the sperm carrying the Y chromosome for a boy is faster moving but dies quicker than the slower moving but longer lasting X chromosome for girls.  What this translates into is that the sperm which carry the Y chromosome for boys can move more quickly but have a shorter life expectancy than their counterparts which carry the X chromosomes for girls.  The vaginal pH can either kill or preserve sperm; pH that is more alkaline will preserve sperm which can influence a baby’s gender.  This gives the “boy sperm” more of a chance to reach an egg to fertilize.  If the PH of the vagina has more acid in it then it will destroy the more delicate sperm and give the female sperm a better chance to  get on an egg so it can be fertilized.

Of course no one can guarantee or control a baby’s gender no matter what they do.  Even the scientific technology used in vitro fertilization is not totally reliable concerning the baby’s gender, so be ready to have either a boy or girl!
