Baby Pushchairs - What to Think About When Buying One

July 1st, 2009    Subscribe To Our Feed

Many brands sell baby pushchairs, buggies, strollers and prams, and searching for the right one for your baby can be a daunting task. If you’re about to have your first child you probably won’t have gone through this process before so it can feel quite difficult, as there so many brands and styles to choose between.

To help make your decision easier have at look at these tips for choosing the best baby pushchair for you and your baby.

•    Functionality
Firstly you need to think about whether you need a pushchair, a buggy, a pram, a stroller or a complete travel system. This decision is based on the age of your child (a newborn needs to lie flat), how you travel (do you need a car seat that can be transfered to your pushchair frame), when and where you’ll be using it (every day, around town, on holiday, etc). On holiday you might want a lightweight stroller but for every day use you may want a complete travel system that incorporates a pushchair, a carrycot that can make a pram, and a car seat.

•    Kids
The second decision is based on how many children you have and their individual ages, and whether you are planning to expand your family in the near future. So will you need a tandem or a twin pushchair, or the option to add another seat or a ride-on board at some stage? If you have two children you need to decide whether you’d prefer them to sit next to each other or one in front of the other, or if you have one child older than the other whether they can ride on an attached ride-on board.

•    Budget
It is important to think about how much money you want to spend and look at which brands are within your budget, as prices can vary vastly. There are many very good quality yet affordable baby ppushchairs as well as more expensive designer brands. It’s worth looking around to find offers and sales on if you have a particular brand in mind that you’d like. But remember that this is an investment for your baby, hopefully a one-off cost so if you do your research thoroughly and get the right pushchair it should last you the next three or four years, or longer if you have a second child.

•    Weight
You need to think about the weight you’ll have to push around, how strong or fit are you, will you be lifting and carrying a pushchair on your own? How do you travel, on public transport, in a car? Where do you live, does it have a lot of stairs that you’ll have to carry the pushchair up and down? Remember when testing the weight of a pushchair that your baby will also be in it so add their weight on to get a true idea of how heavy it will be to push!

•    Manoeuvrability
It’s really important to consider how easy it is to manoeuvre a baby pushchair and to think about where you’ll need to manoeuvre it. Think about whether you’ll be squeezing through tight spaces around town, in and out of shops and through doorways? If so you probably want a swivel front wheel, but a lockable one for using over rougher terrain. If you plan on covering any rough terrain, for example in the countryside, think about the suspension as well as the manoeuvrability.

•    Compactness
When you’re looking at pushchairs in a shop they will most likely be unfolded so remember to try folding them to see how easy they are to fold, and how compact they are when folded. Think about where you are going store it at home, and will it fit easily in your car? Check whether it’s easy to unfold and fold one handed, and whether it has quick release wheels if you need to take them off to fit it in the car easily? If you’re looking at pushchairs online have a look at the sizes of them when they’re folded for storage purposes, as well as when they’re unfolded.

•    Style
Although it’s vitally important to consider all the practical and functional features of pushchairs it’s also important to think about what style you like as it’s something you will probably be using and looking at every day. Styles of pushchairs also vary based on what usage or terrain they’re aimed at, e.g. 3-wheelers are often more rugged and look sporty with large, pneumatic tyres aimed at rough terrain.  But there are now all sorts of styles available, in 3-wheelers and 4-wheelers, from contemporary to classic, minimalist to chunky, pretty to funky, etc.

•    Extras
You might just want to purchase a basic pushchair to start with but have a look at what extras you can add at a later date if necessary? Is it possible to attach a carry cot or a car seat to the frame of the pushchair so you can move your baby without disturbance? Can the pushchair be adapted by adding an extra seat or a ride-on board if you have another child? Some pushchair brands have a whole range of mathcing accessories that can be bought separately, which is great to know as you can then adapt your pushchair as circumstances change without having to buy a new one. Some pushchairs come with more accessories included than others but most of them have a rain cover, a sun hood and a basket or a bag for shopping. Many have a range of accessories available that you can buy separately, such as cup holders, parasols, sun shades, blankets, footmuffs, insect nets, and weather shields. Always check what’s included in the price and what you might have to buy as optional extras.

Seat Comfort
One of the most important elements to think about is whether the seat is comfortable for your child. Have a look if it has several recline positions, including a lie flat position for new babies as not all pushchairs have this option and are not suitable from birth. Have a look for features like an adjustable footrest, adjustable straps, a headrest, pads for smaller babies, etc. Some pushchairs have front and rear facing seats so think about whether your baby will feel happier facing you or looking where they’re going, or whether you want the option to be able to turn the seat around as your baby gets older.

•    Parent Comfort
It’s important considering how comfortable you are going to be as well as your baby. How long will you usually be pushing the pushchair around for and over what sort of ground, rough or smooth. Look for an adjustable handle height (if you’re tall some handles can seem too low). Think about whether you need a footbrake so you have your hands free to deal with other things going on around you? Is it easy to push with one hand while holding the hand of another child with your spare hand? Is it easy to fold with one hand?

You may have thing to consider as well as the things listed here but if take a little time to think about these and have a look around you should end up with the best baby pushchair for your needs. Use the tips here as a starting point for your search, write a list of the things you need and then compare similar baby pushchairs made by different brands before reaching a final decision.

Taking A Look At Child Care Facilities Costs

June 22nd, 2009    Subscribe To Our Feed

child care centers

Imagine handing over 50% of your weekly paycheck to a preschool. Child care facilities receive a huge percentage of a working parent’s paycheck. The prices vary from city to city but all can be expensive for a parent struggling to make ends meet. Even in households with two working adults, the portion paid out each week can cause huge drains on the family finances. Before you commit to paying those tuition payments, you have to know what you are getting for your money.

One of the predominant factors in childcare costs is the city and neighborhood. Higher class residential neighborhoods will have child care facilities that are more expensive. Area wages and factors affecting the economy will have an affect on the cost of childcare. If you live in a district that seems to be more affluent than those around your place of work, you might consider selecting from schools closer to work. This might help lower the cost.

Infants are charged a higher fee than toddlers. The reason being infants require more care and more staff to oversee than older children. Child care centers must pay close attention to the staff-to-infant ratio to ensure that the infants are receiving the highest possible care they can give. Changing diapers and feeding bottles is much more time consuming than working with a potty trained toddler who can feed him or her self.

Other factors that can change pricing between the differing child care facilities is how many services are being offered. A babysitter in your home will usually not provide the extended hours most working parents require. If you have hours that extend from the typical 9-5 work day or have a long commute, you will need a daycare center that has extended hours of pick-up and drop-off. Also, the more added benefits, such as providing meals and snacks will affect the price of too. Many centers now offer activities based on the child’s age such as computers, foreign language and even martial arts or gymnastics. Many centers allow the parent to elect these options for an additional fee but some are building them into the curriculum and daily activity list.

Unfortunately everything in life eventually boils down to money. Elite child care facilities cost far more than the neighborhood babysitter but you get more in return. If you cannot afford the ritzy private preschool, do not despair. There are still very good preschools that are within your budget. Decide on what is most important to you and then go from there. Ultimately, it does the child little good if you are over working yourself just to pay for their daycare.

Feeding a Toddler; a Survival Guide

June 22nd, 2009    Subscribe To Our Feed

Parenting is harder than climbing Mount Everest!  Before you have your first child there are so many things to think about; the pregnancy, the labour, the birth, nappies.  The whole thing is very daunting.  Unfortunately it does not get easier, but you do, however, get better and better at coping.

Feeding starts almost from the first contact you have with your child.  If you are breastfeeding, then many hospitals will encourage breast feeding as first contact between mum and baby. For many new parents this is quite straightforward, others have to work a good deal harder at mastering breast feeding, but whichever your route you feel pleased when they are happily feeding.

A couple of the areas which make parents smile, when they go well, are sleeping and feeding.  So having mastered breast feeding, or bottle, what happens when solids are introduced?  There are many books written to help you understand feeding a toddler, but do you really need any of these?

There are several recognised ways to begin feeding a toddler.  The most common route, especially for first babies is to puree foods until the parents feel that the child is ready to progress.  Many second children are not given this luxury and are simply offered what ever is going on their elder sibling’s plate.  This has now been named ‘baby led weaning’ and has become a popular way to start feeding a toddler.

Many parents will tell you that there first child was a difficult eater, and it was such a joy when their second child took to food fabulously and ate everything.  Could this be because it was presented in a more appealing way and with less trepidation?  Before weaning their first child most parents go on a baby weaning course, read far too many books and speak to other parents to find out tit bits.  With subsequent children there is no time for courses and books, it is not that parents know everything after one child, they simply better understand what is important and how to manage their own nerves.  Or they have realized that feeding a toddler should not be a nerve wracking experience, but a pleasure.

If you want to try feeding a toddler with out the puree food then have a go.  Many parents will look sideways at you, but over time you will realize that your child can feed themselves before children given puree, and they will understand about chewing and they will learn not to put so much in their mouths that they can’t chew.  Feeding a toddler is about teaching you child these important things, it is not just about getting different tastes and textures into them successfully.  Perhaps we should not be taught about ‘feeding a toddler’, perhaps it should be renames ‘teaching a toddler to feed’ and then we may all get there a little quicker.

Male Infertility Sperm Count

June 21st, 2009    Subscribe To Our Feed

Sperm donation is the practice by which a man gives or more commonly sells his semen to be used specifically to produce a baby and it is not a new concept, men have been doing it for years. Dating back over fifty years, sperm donation is still a simple reproductive process. Sperm donation is used when another male has a non-existent sperm count and nowadays is an excepted form of treatment to aid conception.

Unfortunately, male infertility rates are on the increase so sperm donation continues to be popular even though more than one treatment is usually required before conception occurs. During recent years it has also become more commonplace for single women without a partner to use sperm donation as a method to become mothers. Natural conception is difficult for some couple and sperm donation is a way for them to enjoy parenthood naturally.

Often a family member may donate their sperm but this is sometimes avoided owning to a genetic disease within the bloodline. Many women want to feel the child grow inside them and know it as their own so do not look at adoption and are happy to have sperm donation. Sperm donation is normally offered as a facility to men who are undergoing chemotherapy where there is a chance that fatherhood may not be possible when the course of treatment is over.

No longer just a medical matter, sperm donation is now related to the law and ethics and no doubt will become more complicated. Many young men now use sperm donation as a method of raising money as the market for specimens is a lucrative one and at 0 a time, far more than donating blood. The fertility industry has grown massively on the back of egg and sperm donation, caused by rising infertility rates. Unlike sperm donation, which is a relatively quick and simple process, egg donation may require a series of injections. Currently a woman have sperm insemination will have this carried out using ejaculated and washed sperm via the uterus or in vitro.

There are currently no international laws relating to sperm, egg or embryo donation or for the anonymity of the donors themselves as each country decides on how it will deal with the subject. It is a situation that in the long term will need better clarification because if adoption becomes harder or more costly and sperm/egg donation is unavailable, the population rate will start to decrease.

Constructive Ideas For Choosing The Perfect Baby Gifts

June 19th, 2009    Subscribe To Our Feed

People often rush out to buy the cutest baby gifts when a baby is coming. The problem with these gifts is that they are often not practical. Usually new parents really need gifts they can put to use. Sometimes finding the right baby gift can be a real challenge. It is even more difficult if the parents have not registered for gifts.

When buying a new baby a toy safety and education should be your main concerns. Babies will often love toys that are very simple such as soft blocks or stacking cups. Try and stay away from expensive toys with lots of complicated parts or electronics. Never buy a toy for a baby if it has small parts that could be choking hazards. You should also steer away from any pull toy with a long cord that could get wrapped around the baby’s neck.

While there are a lot of adorable frilly little outfits you probably want to stick with more simple clothing. Usually the frilly outfits are saved just for pictures. When buying clothing it is best to buy things one size larger than the baby will wear right away. Don’t forget to take into account the season it will be when the baby fits into them. Most parents can really use items that their baby can wear every day. Items such as playsuits, onesies, and pajamas will get lots of use.

When selecting accessories consider what items the parents will need many of including burp clothes and blankets. Everything you buy should feel good on your skin and be easily cleaned. Nursing pillows are another great baby gift as they can be used many different ways as the baby grows. While not very exciting wipes and diapers will definitely be appreciated by the new parents. When purchasing gifts for a baby remember that they fill their time with such tasks as sleeping, eating and pooping. Any gift that helps the new parents with these three tasks is a good gift.
